Abstracts

These abstracts are based on pre-existing images – found photographs. The found images serve as both inspiration for, and hindrance to, the creation of the final piece.

The shapes, colors and textures of the source photographs influence the composition of each piece of art on which it is built. However, source images are chosen based on their lack of traditional aesthetic appeal. In this way, beauty is drawn out of something that was once ugly or repulsive.

The process involves scanning the original image and then digitally manipulating it until it is complete. Elements of each source image have made their way into the final piece. However, they are disassociated from the original image in various ways so that the final artwork gives no obvious clue about its original subject matter.

Does the knowledge of an underlying image change
the way the art is viewed?

What is the relationship between the source image
and the completed piece?

Does it matter that there is a source image at all?
